Hello,
I have seen that the steam release will come soon. I have been waiting for a while to purchase this game as I didn't see yet an official announcement about a native Linux version.
Will the beta, which will be released on Steam, support natively Linux?
Thank you for your time.
P.S. not interested in emulation, wine, crossover, etc.

  • Is there any specific reason? Generally unity based games are pretty straight forward to release to Linux and Mac.

  • Ive been curious about this as well. I know Unity can spit out some crap sometimes when exporting a Linux client. Seems to like Windows/mac/mobile more. I am curious if a Linux client has even been attempted. I’d also be willing to test/help/even debug.
  • There’s a huge Linux user base on steam. It could increase sales significantly. Particularly because there’s no good mmos native to Linux. LoA would more or less own the market..

  • Well windows 10 came on my laptop. But I had removed it for Linux. But low and behold LoA requires windows and is complete garbage in wine. There is such a huge Linux gaming community these days.

    New here, and first question was about Linux support, as there was Linux (and Mac)on Steam Greenlight page.
    So, i hope there is a Linux client soon enough.
  • this seems to be a lively thread, so I´d like to add some info from my experience:
    While Unity allows a developer to release clients for various plattforms, this does not mean it will be a client that is 'native' to that plattform. For more info you should read more into the subject and Unity handling it. It´s a big topic and there is ways to make it work, but from an industrial perspective it is most often not efficient to invest the needed amount of manpower for maybe 5-10% of your Userbase.
    Don´t forget that a market-share of 10-15% for Linux games includes a ton of simple 2D games that also run on Android and similar mobile devices!
    Best solution is always to run a Windows VM. since CD/USB load have problems if the game needs a lot of your system resources.
    And regarding Unity, even for a big player supporting Indie-projects. there is just 200+ games as far as I know, which shows there is still not much backup for Linux systems. Unity has a native Unity editor by now, but it´s like always - if those 2 people leave the company, nothing will happen again for a long while

    Best solution is always to run a native Linux program.
    Most of us, based on my readings, don't and won't have a Windows disk or whatever, because we don't want to reboot, or install all the basic stuff on another OS, while we spend all the rest of our time on the main OS Linux. It's also a 'political' choice.

    Linux gamers may be a small market share (depends on sources, like Steam with China included is less than 1%, but some indie devs reported almost 20% of Linux sales from their website), but it's active and growing (1% of several millions is still a lot).
    Also, Linux gamers tend to report bugs and give more feedbacks than Windows users, and supporting more than one OS is good for code stability and strenght, as you have to double-check it.
    As for MMOG, we don't have many choices, even if we do have some (Ryzom, Dead Maze, Project Gorgon, Tale of Toast, Shroud of Avatar, Wild Terra, Albion Online, Rogalia, Haven&Hearth..), so a good new MMOG will have more traction on Linux gamers than yet another tycoon game, or yet another RPG.
    The more games on Linux, the more gamers will stay on Linux, not the other way around.

    I think all your points can be read in Unity forums for years. but even Unity kept their Linux editor in beta state
    Other companies still have little to no interest in Linux - even Mac OS is more interesting
    (Blame my opinion on the fact that I´m working in the industry)
    The big markets are consoles and mobiles these days. and if you need at least 1 programmer for each plattform-port. I´d always vote for Win ->mobiles ->consoles ..->. others
    And tbh I have a hard time seeing any big improvement using Linux. Even Apple is just some nice design stuff, with some mediocre system. Ever been using Apple systems professionally? It´s a pain. unless you´re a graphic artist ofc
    Linux lost it´s momentum when only professional Linux distributions had what was needed for enterprises.
    In the same time Windows build great server versions and a nice vm kernel
    On the other hand, Windows came too late to Smartphones. now Adroid everywhere
    And for OS alternatives, SteamOS is also not that bad.
    To sum it up, in that big picture Linux is just a minor force anymore.

    The number of desktop/personal users has gone up from 2/3% to about 7% (and is climbing)
    For an operating system that’s now quickly increasing its market share, and represents more than 7.6 million gamers worldwide, I think that’s a sufficient group to offer a native client to.
    I don’t see how anyone in the mmorpg industry can ignore Linux users anymore. It’s the most sought after genre for millions of Linux gamers. The first company to offer s great game nativ to Linux is going to rule. No, Albion and SOTA are not great games.
    I’d also be careful insinuating that somehow the industry standard is stepping away from Linux. More developers in multiple industries are offering commercial Linux software now, more than ever.
  • @Nefarious No, you´re wrong. Maybe as a typical Linux user it appears to you this way, but at the end of the day Android is as far from Linux as other Unix systems
    Regarding Linux only, my numbers are accurate and @Tchey was also right regarding the utmost displeasure of many Linux users to use a WIN VM.
    I´d like to add, I´m not against building software for Linux, but with limited resources most Indie developers just can´t do it ;(
    Another big problem lies ahead, once a company releases a Linux client, it is hard to maintain that client without heavy investments, because players expect a good service for the product. And Linux games get more problems than Win games in the first 6-12 months.
    Maybe the situation will change in 10 years, but I doubt it.
  • Should also take into account the 'community'. Many games get a 'Linux Beta / Unoffical support' for a while, and the other players assume the support, for free and for fun. And it works, most of the time.
    Three examples i have in mind :
    - Tea The awakening has no official Linux support, but the game does run on Linux. Issues are handed by the community.
    - The MMOG in alpha Project Gorgon has an unofficial Linux launcher since 2014, and will soon have an official one (i think for their Steam release), thanks to all the previous Linux users reporting and supporting the unofficial launcher.
    - Dogma Eternal Night didn't gave Linux client until some of us just said we are OK without support, and we could at least try and report for the time the official client would be ready. So the devs pushed the button without testing, to feed us. Now we have a Linux client, and it's functionnal.
    Also, several indi devs reported the Linux sales are small, but the Linux reports and help to fix stuff is larger in % just because Linux gamers are more used to help and support each others.
    I'm not saying Linux is perfect, not at all, but it's at least perfectly possible to be a gamer, and on Linux, these days. I was dual booting for some years, since 2015 i'm on Linux only, and i won't go back, even if i can't play 'all the games'. I can play enough.

  • This ^^. I'd not wage war here. You are free to have your opinion, in my world, I believe Linux is on rise and will continue so. Only thing that bothers me is that gaming exactly is sphere where we are lacking the most, because honestly - compare any modern Linux desktop to W10 and there's no discussion - Linux is better for desktop. Problem is application alternatives to most favorite commercial apps (and games obviously, but Vulcan can change that). Gallium-nine enabled wine already shows that game performance is not an issue, I was getting same results with multiple games as on Windows (at the time I still had it). Sometimes, even with better stability (compared to my GF who was getting disconnected or crashed more often than me while playing HOTS or POE. I know it's not strict comparison, as it was different computer, but still, I came out on top and she often wondered how that is even possible).
    So let's everybody breath within his favorite OS, will ya? And we, Linux-world gamers, let's hope that this great game Linux client is around the corner.

    @ixxo You haven´t read the whole thread as your answer shows, typical Linux is better mentality + some rant. It´s not which OS is better, but what most games are optimized for. And this thread not even about the OS, but about the Linux client for LoA. And I do support the idea of a Linux client, as long as the general development process of the game is not hurt
    Anyway, I do appreciate what the others here brought to the table.

    The Facts still stand:
    CS could just press the button (with little work) and drop a Linux client for this game.
    Then CS has to maintain that client ,another option would be a community driven project.
    A Linux client, even in beta, might lure new players into Legends of Aria as long as it´s halfway stable.
    From my perspective it would be smart to have a Linux client before Steam launch, might not be the no.1 selling argument, but could add some momentum to the PRO side of the game.

    This I agree with. There is a lot of games with Linux clients, but this is where the mmorpg market falls short. I understand the complications, with updates, maintenance, and the like. Community driven projects tend to be hugely successful in the Linux world.
    It would be great to see a Linux client before steam release. I feel that it would drive an increased player base. That being said, I don’t feel any Linux users here would be opposed to making contributions.
  • I do hope we get a linux server. That does not even depend on Unity, and doesn't need a graphical interface.
    It would cheapen hosting costs and ease sysadmin.
